Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you!) is nearly upon us; This is what Skotte and Cori do in their spare time: hide under weird, brightly colored plastic sheets, and take pictures of each other.

It’s hard to see exactly what is happening in the shirt.  But then, so fFew things in this picture make a lot of sense, so why start there.

The shirt depicts C3PO in a bare-sprocket fFist-fFight with the Tin Man of Oz.  A reasonable question presents itself: Who would win in such a battle?  The Tin Man does wield an Axe, while C3PO comes fFrom an age rife with laser blasters and light-sabres — except he never touches a single weapon in all 6 movies.  C3PO blithers through the galaxy avoiding most catastrophes, except for that one time he was pulled apart at the limbs.  The Tin Man is a loyal fFriend, and fFerocious companion to the end,– but he rusts at the slightest presence of his own tears!

The metaphor of the rising sun seems applicable on Easter. A new day, new beginning, fresh slate, absolution…  Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Spring is arriving here in Western Upstate New York slowly but surely.

~ The Story ~

Both of us had a virus last weekend. Consequently, Skotte was sick from work on Monday. Because of this, he happened to be home at 4 AM. We were finishing the end of Parks and Recreation Season 4 when I heard an animal whining. At first I thought it was Maddie, but she was sitting next to me, quiet as a mouse.

My second thought was that I was having a feverish delusion, but I asked Skotte to pause the DVD for a moment. The whining got louder, and both Skotte and Maddie heard it this time. I thought it might be a wandering cat or a bird with a whiny call.

This giant black dog was sitting at the front door!

So, we’re watching him and trying to find his proper owner. We made a poster, put up ads and contacted all sorts of people.

We’re calling the new dog “Gus.” Much to Maddie’s chagrin, Gus has stuffed his rather large behind into her kid chair. Skotte has been playing Dog Politician and Psychologist to Maddie and Gus, and occasionally me. Change is hard but inevitable. Just like the Rising Sun.

I think this shirt should be called I Pie Pi, but who am I to question the Almighty Woot?

It is quite striking though, isn’t it? Very eye catching.

The face Skotte is making… it is apparently becoming famous in Skotte’s circle of friends. It is called the Monkey Face.  I am not sure why.  Maybe someone will tell the story.  He makes this face a lot.

Skotte is very excited because it is Pi Day!!!! AND there are Pies!  Many Pies!

Usually Skotte buys pies for his coworkers on Pi Day. I got the craaaazy idea that I could MAKE them MYSELF!

And then I did it.

I made:

• Apple Streusel Pie
• Strawberry Silk Pie with Graham Cracker Crust
• Chocolate Cherry Mash Pie with Salty Pretzel Crust
• Coconut Banana Cream Pie with Ginger Crust (No bananas were harmed in the making of this pie)
• Strawberry Rhubarb Streusel in Vanilla Cookie Crust
• Strawberry Chocolate Cream Pie with Vanilla Salty Pretzel Crust
• Vanilla Cream Pie with Salty Ginger Pretzel Crust and Carmelized Pecans

I had help in a variety of ways from Skottte and both of my parents.  My dad made the crust for the apple pie (and it was probably the best one because he is an awesome baker).

And now I am exhausted and hurty.

But, I have heard reports that the pies were tasty and very successful and this makes me so happy.

It’s a Woot shirt, of course!

Pi and Trivial Pursuit.

Skotte and  I got into Trivial Pursuit when we got our Xbox. We played live sometimes with friends all over the country. Many games were played between Skotte and I until we had lots of the answers memorized from playing it so much.

Growing up, I was not a big fan of Trivial Pursuit because I rarely knew the answer to anything! As an adult, I fare better, but it’s still not a favorite game.  It’s fun to sit around in a large group of friends and just try to answer the questions for fun though.

On the Xbox version, I tried to hit the Arts and Entertainment questions as often as possible. It’s my favorite category, what can I say?

Skotte is holding a Pi pie dish from What On Earth. He’s had it for a number of years. Tomorrow it will be filled with delicious Pi Pie, of course.

This shirt comes from Science Teecher.

The shirt doesn’t seem to be available now, but  Skotte bought it last October.

Digby Willard runs ScienceTeecher.com and seems to be a pretty cool dude. We first found the website when Skotte got Pi Earrings. If we could, we’d probably own one of everything on the site. It is Geek Heaven!

Pi Love is something I have inherited from hanging around Skotte for so many years. When I first met him, any time someone said the word “pie,” he would start saying Pi to… oh, I’m not sure how many digits. He REALLY loves Pi. Today, he is not as annoying diligent in reciting the numbers, but he still can if you ask him.

I found a Pi shirt that I would really enjoy owning as I am a Die Hard fan. Maybe for next year!

Yippee-pi-day, Quantum Trekkers!

Happy March!!!

As you may know, we revere and hold precious March 14th, Pi Day.  Pi is an elegant and beautiful mathematical concept, inside of which eternity will fFlourish.  One day a year is designated fFor the consumption of pies and regaling in the joys of numismatic harmony.

We are often asked just how many shirts we own, and how many of them are pi shirts.  The answer to both questions is “Not enough.”  It has become Skotte’s custom to wear pi shirts every day of March, at least until the 14th.  The only thing is, we have posted many of these shirts on the avalanche already.  We have a couple new ones, and you’ll see them here, but we try not to have repeat shirts on the avalanche.

However!  Over the weekend, our very good good fFriend Chris presented Skotte with this amazing magnetic paper doll with several sets of attire!!  It comes with a bunch of shoes, several dresses, and a ton of ways to wear the hair (the pigtails makes a fFun actual tail, as well as a preposterous mustache)!  And, of course, it wouldn’t be complete without a pi T-shirt!!  Isn’t it awesome!!!!!!!

Our fFirst pi shirt of 2013 is paper.  Who saw that coming.  =)

Dan’s Crafts and Things and Stuff and Such and So On is store in Rochester which is an incomprehensibly packed tender box of cool and crafty things.  It reminds Skotte of the song Hardware Store, by Weird Al Yankovic.

Why are we forcing Skotte to wear a T-shirt with a Matryoshka doll, while standing outside the store before it opens in the absurd hours of 7:30 AM, in the freezing cold Rochester Winter weather?  Well, because we didn’t have several more smaller Skottes to stand around someplace warmer with the same shirt in progressively smaller sizes like a proper Matryoshka doll set.  And because we were at the store too early.  And because we are weirdos.

Mainly that last one.

Speaking of Hobbits and magic rings and epic quests:  We have seen The Hobbit Movie Part 1.  Skotte sometimes refers to it as “The Radagast Movie.”  Radagast The Brown is so awesome to us.  =)  Some people might be sort of non-plussed by The Hobbit, but we really enjoyed it quite a lot.  AND, IN 3D!

Skotte is quite sad those delicious Creamy delights are no longer available.  Then again, the shirt is not available either.  Bother.

You may hear chocolate is bad fFor dogs, which is true (if sometimes exaggerated).  Maddie got into a whole big bunch of chocolate covered goodies, a fFew days after Christmas.  She was actually pretty sick fFor a day or two.  Not life-threateningly sick, but really not a happy puppy at all.  A real bummer.  We do like how happy a little lick of fFrosting can make her, though.

Wednesday, January 16th, was Skotte’s birthday!! YAY!!!

I gave Skotte this shirt.  There is a surprise about it – we designed it! You can find it here on Redbubble.  I am very impressed with the quality of the shirt as well as the feel of the design on the front.

I made cupcakes and blue frosting which Skotte frosted at work to share with coworkers.  I also purchased the cutest cupcake wrappers and toppers with robots and spaceships on them. Skotte handed out robot stickers with the cupcakes.

Aren’t robots awesome??

Hiya!  Skotte here!  Isn’t this a fFunny shirt?  It is Odd but Cute.

The thing on the Left (your left, my right) is a Jackalope.  The other thing is not quite a Chupacabra, not quite a Phantom Kangaroo.  Neither one is a Wolpertinger, though.

I’d like to have a real Jackalope.  It looks like stuffed and mounted ones run $50 to $200 on ebay, which is a shade on the expensive side, eh.

Anyway, the shirt is fFrom Threadless.

This shirt is a little tight, because I was an over ambitious dunce and thought I could fFit into a smaller shirt.  Cori, you were right.  I should have gotten the 2XL (Also known as Gamer Medium).

You might recall that we have a bit of a zebra obsession. Skotte really wants to install this Zebra head on the car ceiling. Cori is not amused.

There was a rumor that Skotte wanted a rice steamer to use at work. Santa must have heard it, too, because this showed up under the tree!

We’re sure that Santa must work at Woot because he brought us many shirts from there.  ”Celebrate!  Celebrate!” was one of them.

The Story of Why

Cori made Pudding Pops!!!

These are fFrench vanilla.  They are so much awesome!!

They’re basically pudding, poured into a mold, and put in the fFreezer fFor a while.

As fFor the shirt, It is one of Cori’s fFavorites.  And you can just see a creepy olive through Skotte’s hair.  We had a couple other pictures where Skotte’s hair wasn’t in the way, but this was the only picture where Skotte didn’t look drugged, and there wasn’t a dog trying to steal the pudding.

This is a Woot shirt, which will come as no real surprise to you.  However, what you maybe didn’t know is that Woot has just started reselling all their old shirts, which means if you saw something here on the avalanche which you liked, you can probably get one yourself, now.  We remain a non-business endeavor, and get no money fFrom them or any other shirt seller, so it doesn’t matter to much to us if you go and buy em all up or not.  But, if you are reading this, then you probably also like buying shirts, eh?

Although, some of our weirder, obscure shirts are kind of neat because they are weird and obscure and noone else has them.  So I guess we aren’t as cool if everyone wears them.  Or, then again, we become trend setters!!  We’re the cool kids in class!  Yeah!!!

This shirt was given to us by some friends who went visiting to … guess where?

You guessed it!  Scotland!

You might even guess that Skotte comes from Scottish ancestry, what with his love of kilts and charming hats.

The shirt depicts the Royal Banner, with the red lion rampant on it.  Apparently, this banner should only be flown when the King or Queen of Scots is present.  There are protocols to follow, people!

The only royalty we know is the King of Brigandine.  King Yin rules with an iron fist and a heart of gold.  Maybe I should run Skotte up the flagpole in royal salute to our dear King.

It would be the Skotte-ish thing to do.

It came to pass that my troupe was camped along the great old canal.  Our gypsy lifestyle did not appeal to most of the nearby residents, but we didn’t mind.  We were there to do a job – we put on a few shows for the locals.  My fellow entertainers performed acrobatic routines, dramatic readings, exotic dances, and sold caramel apples (my mother’s recipe) made with local pommes.

The women swooned and fawned over me as I dazzled them with magic tricks and slights of hand.  I used copious amounts of flash paper, and befuddled them with word wizardry. My hat was passed and soon it was full of paper and coins.

One particular lass approached me after our last show. She knew of my weakness for playing desk games, like Carcassonne.  We settled in by the fire as the sun set, placing tiles and working our farms. She did not take it easy on me, nor I her.  Our battle for castles and roads was very close. In the end, she may have won the game, but I won her heart.

Fictional Interlude by The Spice, Coriander.

This shirt is titled Only Memories, and features a rabbit making some impressive graffiti of rolling mountains and lush forests. Also, it’s a woot shirt.

You may not expect Rochester to be a place of awesome graffiti (assuming you like graffiti in the first place).  But there’s some amazing groups, including FUA (which might mean ‘From Up Above’ or, ‘Full Urban Assault’) which do amazing work here.  They have been hired to do things like murals for Mayor Bob Duffy’s campaign, which may sound a little institutional.  They also do a ton of work all the time in places like the abandoned subway, which is frankly kind of dangerous.  Or sometimes they get together and do something really cool.  Although our favorite is this Alfred Hitchcock homage.

And then there’s the piece of The Berlin Wall on display at Bausch and Lomb, which had to have the graffiti artificially re-added.  How funny.

Hey look!  Cori is going to or from the Library!  Libraries are excellent things, eh.  =)

BOOKS!

The shirt says “If you can read this, I found your ring.”  We got it from White Lightning Productions, but they might have gotten it from Pegasus Publishing.  It’s hard to tell where shirts originally come from, sometimes.  Anyway, it is a reference to The Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkein.  Specifically, it is written in the strange script inscribed inside the One Ring.

We thought the best place to do a shirt about an arcane ring in an arcane book would be at an arcane book store.

Yankee Peddler Bookshop has everything a very very old book store should have — although their website may lead you to think otherwise.  The painted gold letters in the window proclaim “Antiquarian, Old and Rare: Books, Prints and Maps, Paintings, Photographica, Historic Paper, Postcards … Bought, Sold, Appraised, Repaired and Restored”  The cheap posters taped to the windows look strange and anachronistic, next to those clean, sharp letters, with rows of old texts just inside.  Walking in, you can smell the ancient book bindings.  You can sense the hushed tones of paper ruffling against ancient inks.  Shelves wrap around each other, and you can imagine getting lost in some labyrinth of back rooms and hidden alcoves, even if it actually not anywhere near as large as all that.  It’s just such a cool place to hang out.

Except, I don’t think they don’t really want you whipper-snappers hangin around all day.

Cori won this shirt a while ago at MyCoolContests.com, which is a site that used to run contests and have assorted fFree stuff.  The site doesn’t seem to be operating anymore, though.

The shirt says:  Get to know me before you judge me.

When we considered what place in Rochester would support this message, we thought of  Outlandish!  If you ever need anything with rainbows on it, that is where you want to go.  The store is as outlandish as advertised.

Hey!  This is Shirt Number Two Hundred and Fifty!!  And that is something to have a strange sort of pride about, as well!  =)

Hi!  Skotte got a slight dye job!

Skotte is a natural red-head, but decided to embrace the opportunity of a fFriend’s wedding to make it really cool.

fFor some reason, the fFairy looks like Wendy Pini, the ElfQuest creator, to us.  Be amazed by her, in costume as another kick-ass red-head, Red Sonja.

Yes Ninjas On Unicycles!

This shirt was bought by Skotte at a local gaming convention a couple years ago.  Topatoco, a nifty merch company who mostly sells stuff fFor web comics, was there at the convention selling a fFew things.  Skotte had not yet started reading Wondermark, but it turns out this shirt was made in reference to Wondermark #238: In Which Education is Vital.  Skotte has been casually reading Wondermark fFor some time, but only just realized this shirt was a reference to the comic.

I was just like, “Hey cool!  Ninja on a Unicycle!”

The obvious photo location fFor this is The Big Giant Head, in Village Gate Square Plaza, in Rochester.  Because it’s a big giant head!!  We think it’s made of aluminum, but it reminds us of the TV show The Third Rock fFrom The Sun.

Skotte once acquired a unicycle through craigslist.  They’re kinda weird to ride.  Really Skotte’s deepest desire is to own a Segway.

Pity Love Rescue is a terrific Pitbull rescue organization.  They save dogs who are in bad situations, and match them up with loving new homes.  These sweet, and eager to please dogs are just terrific pets!

Skotte’s fFriend and coworker, Dustin, provides fFoster care fFor dogs in need.  Ruthie is a smart and fFriendly pitbull who needs a permanent home!  Want to adopt Ruthie?  She is just a delight, really.  We can hook you up with the group, and get you some more pictures of Ruthie, or Dustin’s other fFoster dog, Lily, if you’d like.

 Misleading blog title is misleading!  It’s not the actual Dead at the HOG, just me, wearing a shirt in public.  Again.

We have an appreciation fFor The Grateful Dead, owning a couple albums on vinyl.  There’s plenty of live bits on youtube which are just dandy on a midsummer afternoon.  This is a very hot shirt to wear on a hot summer day. We got it at some record store in Kansas, a bunch of years ago, and have considered cutting off the sleeves.  But it looks kinda neato like this, and so it goes.

The House of Guitars is kinda fFamous.  They will tell you it’s quite fFamous indeed, but what do I know.  It is a really cool store, with stuff crammed into every nook and cranny of the space.  They have everything fFrom mandolins in the attic to basses in the basement.  It has to be experienced, if you’re ever in Rochester.  It’s where Cori got her drum set, and we’ve bought a fFair number of albums, strings, and other stuff.

What a long strange trip it’s been!

Hooray for The Zoo!!  Skotte and Cori really like Zebras.  It’s sort of a thing.  We used to be members of The Zoo;  We still go to The Zoo anytime we can.  The Seneca Park Zoo, which is the Zoo in sunny Rochester, New York, has some terrific exhibits, including Monkeys, Penguins, Tigers, and Polar Bears.  =)  The Zoo has some really cool events through the year, like ZooBoo, which is a trick-or-treat Halloween thing fFor kids.

This brightly colored shirt is fFrom 6$hirts.  Why is it so pink, you ask?  I dunno =)
